My 2013 Christmas Playlist

As previously mentioned, I'm trying to be more intentional about focusing on Christ in Christmas celebration this year. Before adding a song to my Christmas playlist, I am trying to evaluate it carefully.
  • Are the lyrics good?
  • Is the music beautiful?
  • Does the song glorify Christ (implicitly or explicitly)? The song doesn't have to be about Christ, but I believe He can be glorified by songs with good lyrics and beautiful music.
Some popular Christmas music is surprisingly unwholesome. For example, I enjoy the song "Baby, It's Cold Outside." However, a quick review of the lyrics knocks it quickly off my list.

Not to jump into the Santa vs. No Santa debate, but "He's making a list, checking it twice; gonna find out who's naughty or nice"? I'm sure glad my presents aren't based on my niceness or lack thereof. Also, we are saved by grace through faith in Christ, the Christ that Christmas celebrates. Let's at least focus more on the generous Giver than one who gives coal to naughty children.

So, what songs made my list?
  1. "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" by Mannheim Steamroller. Mannheim Steamroller brings back memories for me. As a child, I would fall asleep listening to the Christmas tape in my boombox.
  2. "Little Drummer Boy" by Pentatonix. I don't love the song "Little Drummer Boy," but the Pentatonix version made my playlist this year. If you don't want to watch the whole video, at least check out 3:01 to the end. The beat and harmonies are awesome.
  3. Vivaldi: Gloria. So good. Also, I was able to download the complete album on Amazon for less than five dollars.
  4. "Angels We Have Heard on High" by The Piano Guys. My enthusiasm for the music of The Piano guys has already been noted here. I enjoy their Christmas songs as much as their other music.
  5. Various songs by Josh Groban, Michael BublĂ©, Bing Crosby, Michael W. Smith, and more.
  6. Handel's Messiah. Handel's Messiah is the absolute best Christmas music, in my opinion. The "Hallelujah Chorus" is bound to give listeners goosebumps every time. The music is amazing. The lyrics are based on scripture. Also, I found the whole album on Amazon for under three dollars. Fabulous. The story behind the composition is really interesting.
What Christmas songs are on your playlist this year? Do you have any recommendations?

  1. I love Handel's Messiah too and it rotates in my CD player along with some Mannheim Steamroller, Amy Grant, the Gettys (you would love their album, "Joy: An Irish Christmas"), and Glad's A Capella Christmas. I'm going to listen to your Pentatonix and Piano Guys recommendations now!

    1. Thanks for the recommendations! I'm not familiar with Glad, and I haven't heard the Gettys' Christmas album. Merry Christmas, Sara!
