Davy's Delights: Craft: Personalized Onesies

In preparation for a baby shower, I searched Pinterest for ideas. I was looking for a useful and classy homemade gift that required minimal crafting ability and very little money. The "onesie onesie" from See Kate Sew was a perfect start!

Rather than using a picture stamp, I found an alphabet set in a great font. My experience was trial and error, and I learned several lessons:

New crafts require money. My goal is to save money on future gifts by reusing the supplies needed for this one.

Fabric paint dries quickly. Make sure to keep brushes and stamps wet throughout the process. Brushes are ruined if the paint dries on them. I learned the hard way.

Create your own stamp pad. Simply place paint under a piece of felt in a dish. I found the idea here.

Practice is very important. You only get one chance on the actual onesie, so perfect your design first!

Supplies:

Onesies, washed and dried
Stamps
Fabric paint
Paintbrush
Fabric stamp pad (if desired)
Masking tape
Water
Fabric to practice on (I used an old shirt)
A piece of cardboard or thick paper

First, prepare your supplies and practice your design. Then, place a piece of cardboard inside the onesie to prevent paint from soaking through. Next, tape the onesie to the your work surface. You do not want it to move around as you work.

If you are using multiple stamps, lay them out as desired. While practicing, I learned that the blocks for "l" and "i" are much wider than the actual letters. You can see below that I left less space for them.

Carefully stamp the letters, making sure to clean each stamp right away. The paint will be nearly impossible to remove after it dries.

Use a paint brush to fill in any light spots, if desired. I wanted the letters to look somewhat worn, but not too light.

Allow the paint to dry, then remove the tape and cardboard.

In addition to names, I also made a few with "1 2 3" and "A B C."
